Guessing Game Monday

What is this thing I have in my hand?

One of the things I absolutely love about vintage-hunting is happening upon some quirky piece of history, which is what happened the other weekend, when I found this old device in the market in Carnon. What do you think it is? And no, this is not yet listed in the vintage section of the shop, so there are no clues there :D

Get researching on Google, or invent an answer, but tell me what you think this machine is and do it quick! I'll pick a random winner by Friday. The winner gets one of my Golden Apples.

And, you must know by now that I love to laugh, so whoever manages to make me laugh out loud with an invented answer will get a consolation prize. If you can pass the word around about this giveaway, I'll be happy. Thanks!

I think it's an old machine to measure your eyes. You know; if you have bad eyesight?

Or maybe it's a really, really old version of a viewmaster.

It's a stereo-viewer, so you can see postcards/pictures, a sort of viewmaster avant-la-lettre.

Team effort: Craig says it's a stereoscope, so that's our collective guess.

It's an eggbeater!

I've seen this in a movie - it's a stereoviewer/stereoscope to view pictures, etc. Very cool find!

Oh! I know! I know! I know! I have seen these. You put a picture in the front and then you look at them through the glasses.

Very pre-dvd, pre-computer, pre--- well just about everything!

it is a dia-film viewer.
I dont know its proper English name, but was used for viewing photos in this form:

It's one of those things where you put the double picture card in, and when you look through it, it looks 3D!!

It's a vintage stereoscope! It reminds me of a toy I had as a child, but mine was modern and plastic (and made by Disney, haha).

One of my favorite childhood books had one of these as part of a magical story. The Astonishing Stereoscope by Jane Langton. Thanks for bringing back a wonderful memory.

it's an old viewmaster! like those red ones that were popular back in the 80's :) except that it looks like you have to put photos instead of the revolving microfilm

Could it be vintage optometer, to test your vision? Whatever it is, it looks neat!

Just found your shop and blog and came across your contest.

I think I've seen one of these before!! It might be a late 1800's or early 1900's perfecscope handheld stereoscope viewer.

Awesome find by the way!!

How cool! I think it's called a stereoscope. The wire prongs are used to mount a picture card and perhaps you'll see the images in 3D.

Pretty apples, too!
